OMAHA, NE – Today the US Food and Drug Association (FDA) announced final guidance to allow the use of “potassium salt” as an alternative to “potassium chloride salt” on the ingredient label for food products. This guidance is part of the FDA’s Nutrition InnovationStrategy to reduce the burden of chronic disease in the United States by improving nutrition and promotion of healthier food options by encouraging the use potassium-based salt as an alternative to sodium-based salt. Americans consume, on average, 3,400 mg of sodium per day- nearly 50% more than the 2,300 mg recommended limit.

NuTek Natural Ingredients has pledged support for the FDA’s new guidance. NuTek has been working for this change including their initiative in 2016 with the filing of a Citizen’sPetition to encourage the change to support sodium reduction in food products with a balance of potassium salt. Several food manufacturers also pledged support of this initiative to provide healthier food options to consumers while giving transparency in ingredient labelling. The FDA draft guidance considered, in part, the NuTek Citizen’s Petition.

“Clearly we are very happy to see this cross the finish line. This is a significant step forward for global health and consumers’ understanding the importance of sodium reduction as part of a healthy lifestyle.” commented Barry Knudson, COO, NuTek Natural Ingredients.
